TN Promise, TN Achieves, and Community Service

imagesTennessee Promise is a financial aid program offering Tennessee high school graduates five semesters of tuition-free community or technical college beginning with the Class of 2015. The program provides eligible students a last-dollar scholarship, meaning it will cover tuition and mandatory fees not covered by the Pell grant, the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship, or the Tennessee Student Assistant Award. A key component is the individual guidance each participant will receive from a mentor as the student enters higher education. Students must complete the tnAchieves program to access Tennessee Promise dollars. (Copy & Pasted from the TN Achieves Mentor Handbook)

TN Achieves is a partnering organization to the Tennessee Promise. It provides mentors and support to all post-secondary participants. TN Achieves ultimately seeks to build a strong workforce by increasing educational attainment opportunities across the state. As part of this program, all participating students are required to do eight hours of community service prior to the start of each semester. Students must complete and register their Fall 2015 service hours by August 1, 2015, students must complete Spring 2016 service hours by December 1, 2015, and students must complete their Fall 2016 service hours by August 1, 2016. Because Martin Methodist offers an associate of      arts degree, it is eligible to participate in the state’s Tennessee Promise program, which will offer $3,800 per year to each high school graduate who wishes to enroll in a two-year curriculum beginning in 2015. MMC’s Promise Plus grant will add $3,800 per year of additional funding, making each student’s financial package at least $7,600 per year. In addition, Martin Methodist will continue to offer that matching grant for two more years should the recipient decide to continue on to a bachelor’s degree.

imagesTo ease the burden placed on Giles County graduating seniors and incoming Martin freshmen, we’ve created a list of local service opportunities for all local TN Achieves recipients to access as they work towards completing their required service hours. Students may list Brandi Belcher, Director of Martin Serves!, as their service contact person on the TN Achieves Community Service Form. All students are asked to log all service hours with TN Achieves AND Brandi Belcher at bbelcher@martinmethodist.edu. If you represent an organization who wishes to be included in this list, please contact Dr. Melissa Martiros at martinmethodist.edu.
